I was walking past the Autumn-planted broad beans today, growing in the veg ditch, thinking how amazingly healthy looking they were. The ones we grow on our allotment are usually covered in black fly by now.
For a week or so they have been making bean pods - and some have beans in them that you can feel. So I picked a few to see what they might offer.
The answer is very small, quite sweet, beans. I will blanch them and add them to a bean salad for lunch.
If you are also walking past, you are very welcome to help yourself - but it is probably best to wait until they are larger. Or some people eat them whole when the pods are very small (RHS recipe).
